Styling Tips – Bags of Style

So how do you spin your style so that it looks and feels new and interesting without spending a fortune on new stuff…

So after a long absense, for which I apologise, here are a few recent Instagram looks which feature different ways of carrying your handbag or, for my American friends, your purse. It seems a simple enough equation, you need stuff so you carry a bag, right! But listen up folks ;O

Classic flannel coat worn over a black shirt and this season’s favorite animal print pants. I’m wearing the bag over my shoulder from the short chain

One of the simplest styling strategies is to experiment with how to wear a bag. If you always wear or carry your bag in the same way you are missing opportunities to add flexibility and drama to your look, and all without buying anything new at all!

Here I’m swinging my bag from the shorter chain strap

The bag I’m using in all the outfit photos is my current favorite from a favorite brand, Zadig & Voltaire hehre But there are lots of other brands which have the flexibility of long straps for cross-body wear and shorter for on the shoulder.

Here I’m using the same bag as a clutch

Clearly you can remove the straps when you are carrying a bag in this way, however I prefer the effect that the dangling straps give.

Halfway heft!

Cross body on the longer strap

Cross-body hanging to the back

Followers will have gathered by now that my personal style falls into the rock chic or edgy spectrum of fashion, though if you take a closer look most of my key pieces are really classic, and it’s only through the styling details that they become avant garde.

In my blog I try to give easy tips on how to personalise your look and how to get more bang for your bucks. I’m not about buying lots of cheap stuff and throwing it away. My philosophy is to buy good pieces and make the most of them, with a little creativity a little goes a long way.

That’s it for now folks but I’ll be back with more tips and tricks soon. Thanks for dropping by. Sarah X

Transitional Dressing

Now you may have already read the post on the new season’s must haves (If not click on Menu, My Wish List) where I talk about ubiquitous animal print.  Well you either love it or hate it, so if you’re in the later camp there are plenty of other wearable themes that will be populating our high streets for the next few months.

I started to change-up my closet with the addition of a pair of waisted, tailored pants, above.  I bought these on sale, similar here here here and here I won’t be giving up my jeans or my leather pants but I do think that the tailored cropped pant is looking modern again…or perhaps I just stopped wearing as I don’t go into an office on a regular basis 😉  This style of pants suits a belt to maximize your waist, if you’re lucky enough to have one, I’m wearing a plain black one, similar here but clearly there are many cheaper options readily available.

For this look I’ve paired the pants with a patterned silk blouse, from Zadig but from eons ago.  This season’s version here  Any kind of blouse will work, but I chose a feminine style to off-set the masculine cut of the pants.  Clearly I’m still in sandals but as soon as the temperatures drop a little I’ll be digging out my boots!

My bag is a classic from Zadig et Voltaire, this time I’ve picked a bigger model, exact here as I needed the space for travel documents etc.  The trend is definately towards bigger bags.  I’ll be topping this look off with a blazer, I like these here and here and here or a biker style leather here  I have these styles already, and I expect that you have too.  My tip for buying leather is to get the best that you can afford.  I soft leather Perfecto will serve you for all your adult life.

For my second look I’ve switched the blouse for a more structured shirt style, this one is old, but the same style in a  similar animal print is available this season here  I’ve used a leopard print to demonstrate that you should not be afraid of mixing grey and black with brown and tan.  In my opinion the mix is effective and breaths understated style.  To emphasise the point I’ve added a tan belt here and here  and I will do the same with boots soon.

My gladiator sandals are my go to footwear for a few more weeks, these ones are from Valentiono, scored in the sale YAY!!!, I like these ones here

The message not to forget is to look at what you have in your closet first and then hit the shops, or the keyboard, with a list of the items that you need to refresh what you already have.

That’s it for now folks, thanks for stopping by.  Hugs, Sarah x

More Leopard Looks

I’m lovin this saphire-blue leopard lovely, again from , and from the same label as the pants I wore earlier in the week, Fabienne Chapot.  I’ve styled it with lightweight cotton coated pants which give the effect of leather, and a studded crossbody bag from my fav Zadig.  I think this look is classic and chic but with a dash of rock and roll.

Amongst my parcel of goodies on loan from the-bias-cut I also received this gorgeous little zebra bag (below)

How cute is this little beauty?!  It’s a lovely quality, versatile little number that can be used as a clutch, or worn with the chain as a shoulder or cross-body bag, and the tassel can be removed to create a different look…a win win in my opinion!

Thats it for now folks, thanks for dropping by!  Hugs, Sarah X

FDC Young Designer Awards 2018

Badassbabyboomer was invited Front Row to the FDC Young Designer Awards in Birmingha, UK…so what did we do…hop on a plane..

A press/blogger invitation to attend the Fashion Designers’ & Craft Makers’ Network annual Young Designer Awards show was an opportunity not to be missed.  It is a new departure to feature a fashion show on my blog but as the event combines two of my passions,  fashion and supporting young people to achieve their goals it was an easy dicision to take.  Photographer, Iza Jarcyn, and I hopped on a plane.

Young designers competed for the prestigious title and the winner announced.  The title of FDC Young Designer 2018 deservedly went to Bethany Hilton.  Bethany graduated from Birmingham City University only this year but has already clocked up impressive work experience with J W Anderson, Julian MacDonald and Amanda Wakely amongst others.

From the start I liked Bethany’s professionalism, and although I thought that her competition model was rather overwhelmed by fabric, I liked the attention to detail in the design and make.

I particulary liked the designers screen printed fabric designs (hand painting her screens  with dye resistant media first to create unique textures in the design) and the metallic hilights in print and in accessories.  I loved the silver hardware (but of course!) that Bethany used to create detachable pockets and straps.

The final deciding factor for me, and a guess for many other fashionistas, was would I wear it?  I this case a resounding yes!  I would dearly have liked to sneak off with one of Bethany’s maxi coats.  I would style it street wise over jeans and tee and it would look sensational 😀

After the show I had an opportunity to take a closer look at the garment finish which was immaculate in Bethany’s case.  For me a worthy winner and certainly a name to watch in the future.  Congratulations to Bethany Hilton!

Bethany had some stiff competition and we also liked designs from Gema Lewis…

We were not disappointed by the talent on display.  Hosted at the Cube, Birmingham, canal side, the venue could have been perfect on such a sunny day.  The stair-well of the cube would have created a much more spectacular runway for the models who were struggling to walk in a gloomy low ceiling venue with dark carpeting.  It was a shame too that the turn out was sparse.  The competition and the talent on display deserved better planning and organisation to do it justice.

The charity associated with the FDC fasion show for Angleman Syndrome (discover more and help ) was represented by Donna Edmunds who spoke passionately about the foundation’s ongoing research to find a cure for the little known syndrome from which her five year old daughter suffers.

Donna has been inspired by her daughter’s needs to create a range of bright and fashionable clothing which solve problems such as wear and tear on the knees of children who continue to crawl, or suitably comfortable pants for those who are constantly seated in wheel chairs, or for those who are stressed by tight fitting clothes being pulled over the heads and necks.  Donna is seeking financial support to forward her business so that she can mass produce her clothing designs.

That’s it for now folks.  More of our adventures in Birmingham in a later post.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed a little fashionista input.  Bye for now, Sarah X

Tiger + Leopard = ? ;)

There are not many places that are quainter than our local white town (Pueblo Blanco) of Benahavis, set in the foothills above the coast of Marbella.  We wandered around the little windy, cobled streets one evening this week and my friend Claire snapped me in various locations while the menfolk enjoyed a glass of wine in a tiny courtyard bar.  I’m mixing my animals Tigepard?  Leoger?  ;p  This outfit is pretty well all old pieces so I’ve done my best to show similar items to get this easy breezy look.

The poet blouse is a real versatile buy, similar here and here and for a cheaper alternative here the pants are also by Rabens Saloner, no longer available, similar here and these are rather fun here ;O

My bag is a current shape from Zadig but not available in leopard at the moment.  No wardrobe is complete without a spot of leopard in my opinion, and a handbag is an easy way to buy into this timeless trend.  This one is cute here or you could blow the budget on one of these investment pieces here and here ;)….I would LOVE that Dolce & Gabanna one sigh….

I’m sporting plimsoles again…soo comfy!  These ones are cheap as chips from H&M here

I’ve chucked on a handful of hardware for the finishing touch and I’m ready to go in 5.

Once again many thanks for stopping by.  Hugs, Sarah X

Rockin’the Blues in Zadig

Here I’m wearing a navy cashmere fringe cardi in one of Zadig’s perenial designs here over the same tee as before here

How cute are the bag here, and I also loooove this one here, and the hat here  the whole outfit looks cool with these blue leopard pants don’t you think?  here

I don’t often wear blue, but I must say I’m very tempted by this little ensemble ;D!!!

It’s all in the deets!  Love the side stripe with the leopard, and check out the exact match with my jewelery…YAY!!!!

That’s all for today’s peek into my Zadig dressing up box 😉  More to follow….

As always thanks for stopping by my friends.  Bye for now, Sarah X

Rockin Zadig

Rockin Zadig & Voltaire, El Corte Ingles, Marbella, with Iza on camera…
