When we visit Madrid we normally stay in the area Barrio de los Recoletos sandwiched between Calle de Serrano to the East, an area where all the major designer brands have their flagship stores, and the parallel street Calle de Claudio Coello, (my favorite) home to the younger hipper brands. To the South lies Retiro Park and the museum triangle of the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and a little further to walk, the Museo Reina Sofia, famed for its collection of modern art, particularly of Picasso, including the unmissable Guernica inspired by the atrocities of the Guerra Civil (the Spanish Civil War). to the West lies the Artisanal Quarter of Barrio de Chueca.
After a visit to the Fundacion MAPFE (on Paseo de Recoletos) to view the Joan Miro permanent Collection we wandered around until we found a restaurant for a light lunch. After a pleasant lunch at niMU Barquillo we wandered around exploring some of the smaller independent shops.
Loved this spacious shop and managed to make a few purchases (all on sale…Yay!) while Mr F was seated comfortably with a newspaper and some magazines…
I managed also to source a cap…not sure if its Naval Officer or Chauffeur…but its just what I was looking for 🙂 ….and I scored a fabulous cashmere and silk mix scarf in leopard and zebra print mix ;0….I loved this scarf 2 years ago but was not prepared to pay the price! The Zadig & Voltaire outlet shop came up trumps…RESULT!!!!
Another shop that held a siren call for me was closed for lunch (some of the smaller retailers still hold to the old days of siesta time…but not many these days).
Luckily, next day, after a visit to the Museo Thyssen to view the special exhibition of Toulouse Lautrec and Picasso paintings showing the huge influence that Lautrec had on Picasso’s earlier work (amazing…I had no idea)..
…we wandered back via B.ones shop (b.onesibiza on Instagram) and again Mr F was entertained royally while his wife tried on half of the shop ;)… I loved this independent and its choice of labels and practiced my Spanish with the owner all errors excusable by the mutual passion for fashion! I bought a gray velvet hoodie and black button front pants…both on sale 😀
Here I’ve changed everything but the jeans… I’m wearing a black patterned silk blouse (old) similar here a cardigan similar here and here my favorite scarf patterned with skulls exact here Chloe Susanna boots (old – and defo an investment buy even though I scored them on sale ;O) exact here and here and I’m toting my black studded cross-body also from Zadig exact here
I also managed a recce of Serrano and Claudio Cuello and managed to buy a pair of Ranger boots, on my list, from Twin Set which, although not new to me, I haven’t actually purchased from before. The best part about shopping in this area for me is the amazing shop windows and merchandising. Being an ex retailer I really appreciate display and some of the examples I saw were real art.
…and finally one of Mr F…he got himself ready…do you think that this styling thing is beginning to rub off?!!!
That’s it for now my friends. I hope you enjoyed this taste of life in Madrid, Spain and that I’ve managed to capture some of its flavor in this whistle top tour. Sarah aka Badassbabyboomer xxx
